Wearable Art - The New Icons
There is something very inspirational about working with found objects. For me, the process of making art with discarded materials is a metaphor for redemption wherein old, ugly things are turned into new and beautiful creations. This idea of reclamation eventually led me to the notion of making my own updated icons, important and enduring symbols that show up in cultures all across the globe. For this particular project, I was inspired by Russian iconic paintings which I then reinterpreted into wearable art. It’s such a blessing to make intriguing pieces with uplifting meanings, and the great thing about working with mixed media is that it allows me to explore a wide range of creative (and future) possibilities.
These pieces were featured in the summer 2008 issue of Belle Armoire Jewelry. The body is made of polymer clay, the wings are recycled and repurposed aluminum from soda cans and shower drains, and the face is hand colored shrink plastic. Chain is made from aluminum rings.
