I grew up around fish and birds--not goldfish
and guppies, but flounders, codfish, and lobsters. Being the
daughter of a commercial fisherman, my siblings and I spent the
summers running the docks and catching fish with handheld lines.
We'd hop on board my father's boat and look for hidden treasure.
When it comes to birds, we had all kinds. It seems like we always
had a parakeet flying through the house or an orphaned robin needing
to be rescued. Our Rhode Island Reds used to free-range through the
neighborhood; they even tried to follow us into the house, much to
my mother's dismay. Neither Fish nor Fowl is an ode to my
childhood. It's a whimsical remembering of a few of my favorite
things, a hybrid that combines vintage elements with bright colors
and bold patterns--all of which appeals to me as a growing artist
and a mother reflecting on her own childhood.
