Birds were a fascinating part of my growing up. When I
was a girl, we used to raise a few chickens, mostly Rhode Island Reds and
Flying Bantams and we'd collect their warm eggs in our hands. My dad's
pigeons flew in clusters around and around our house and over the years, we
kids rescued many a wayward chick that had fallen from its nest. Now, birds
are more than just wonderful little creatures. They've become delightful
spiritual metaphors for me--soaring reminders of God's presence. They mean
hope for the future. In my mind, this pendant symbolizes the care that God
pours out on the tiny sparrow. It's a tangible reminder that I am loved in
this vast and wild world.
